Regina Carregha, On Set for Duplicity

Regina Carregha, actress and co-producer for the film Duplicity, shares with us her thoughts and experiences while working on this film.

1. Why do you think Duplicity is a story that needs to be told?

This is a story I would’ve loved to see on screen when I was growing up. It’s a rom-com where, yes, there are mentions of where these two characters are from, and hints of their culture, but they’re very subtle. This is an example of the content I’d love to see more. Stories of real people, with depth, and a background. Breaking the stereotypes through storytelling sharing their unique and different experiences.

Representing the different Latinx, Brown, Asian, Black, Indigenous, etc. groups, that are covered with such broad terms, but include different and unique sub-cultures within each category.

 2. What were the challenges that you faced when creating this project?

Well first, we produced this during COVID-19 times, which all on its own it’s a major challenge, keeping in mind distance, location scouting, the catering, constantly having to remind ourselves to keep our masks on. Then, this was my Producing debut, so Sofia and I entered the first pre production meeting clueless of how to manage it. We would just say “Yes, And…” like our acting background taught us to wing things. My father who is the writer of this story, passed us this motto which is “When an opportunity is presented, always say Yes, even if you don’t know, and then you’ll figure out on the way” so this is basically how Sofia and I, with this incredible team, brought the written words on to life.

3. What was your favorite moment during the entire process of creating this project?

We had the wonderful story written as a play, and through constant questioning and analysis, the story grew a little more in depth. I am pretty proud of the piece of art we all created. Also, the fact that my father wrote this piece, my sister and I co-produced and starred in it, and my partner and I got to act together once more, makes this experience one of the biggest treasures I’ll cherish forever.

And lastly, my favorite part of the process is getting to know deeper and working with each one of the people who were involved in this project. It was such a great networking experience, because I trust each one of them, and would highly recommend them to anyone who’s looking for someone for their crew.

4. What are the different things that you learned after having done this project?

I enjoyed working on and off camera simultaneously. Yes, it was a challenge since I was also co-producing, catering and figuring out the logistics. To be honest, I wish I had more time to focus on my acting preparation, as well as the journey of my character. However, I learned that if I pulled this off and came out with this as the result, I need to trust myself more, and this is proof that I can.

5. What’s your favorite line/scene from the script and why?

“This is my Cuchurrumin, you Judas” I loved having that line! It made me connect with my inner catholic hopeless romantic. I also love the bathroom realization scene, where Renata imagines what her sister and her boyfriend are doing behind her back! That was such a fun shot to take. The bathroom was TINY, and having them both coming up and down the narrow bathtub whenever it was their turn, and Sookie holding the light, that Fun Fact the improvised red Gel was made out of the back of my notebooks from school, which had to be ripped in other to fulfill its new purpose.  Anyway, there were 6 people in a 5’ x 6’ bathroom filming one of the most iconic scenes in the film.

 6. Is there any other project that you are currently working on or would like to work on in the future?

Yes! I’m a substantial role in both “Bad Juju” and “Hotel America” which are two Independent Short Films, currently in Post Production, and will be released this Spring 2021! I’m also part of the cast and production team of “Don’t Touch the Art” a short film produced by Stubborn and Nasty Productions which will be shot this Fall 2021.

And last but not least, we’re starting the pre- production for our next project which will be part of a series of short films called “420” where we might see Renata and Sandra back...
